Vets

The veterinary team at Stoke have a broad range of clinical interests and experience.  Our pursuit of excellence in those areas of interest through continuing education and training means we are able to provide you with a wealth of knowledge and experience across the spectrum of small animal veterinary care.

Peter Hayes

Peter Hayes Peter graduated from Massey University and has been working in Nelson since 1977.  After starting in mixed practice he has been working as a small animal practitioner exclusively since 1992.  Peter has pursued his interests through post graduate study in both Small Animal Medicine and Ophthalmology.  He achieved his Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Medicine in 2000.  Peter enjoys relaxing outside of work with his wife Dawn and three children.  He is an avid mountain biker, windsurfer and skier.  You can email Peter at peter@stokevets.co.nz

Callum Irvine

Callum Irvine Callum graduated from Melbourne University in 1998 with 1st Class Honours and joined our team in 2004 after working in Australia and the UK, becoming a director of the practice in 2008. He has a keen interest in Orthopaedic and Soft Tissue Surgery having completed several post graduate courses in this field.  He is presently studying for his Membership to the Australia College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery and was the first vet in Nelson to offer Triple Tibial Osteotomies (TTO) for the management of Canine Cranial Cruciate Disease. Callum also has a seat on the Executive of the Companion Animal Society of the NZVA. Callum spends his time outside of work with his wife Megan and three boys Will, Tom and Samuel. He spends his spare time mountain biking and kite surfing. Joyce Ballance

Joyce Ballance Joyce graduated from Massey University in 1987.  She worked in Wellington and then the UK before starting work here at Stoke Veterinary Clinic in 1995.  She completed her Australian Membership exams in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care and Anaesthesia in 2003, and is committed to continuing education in these fields.  Joyce also runs our Puppy Preschool.  She is active in the visual arts and is a keen gardener and also enjoys exploring the outdoors with her Border Terrier Macduff and crazy cross breed Charlie and boating with partner Paul.  You can email Joyce at joyce@stokevets.co.nz

Meg Irvine

Meg Irvine Meg Irvine rejoined the Stoke Vet Clinic team in 2008. Meg is a Nelsonian and Massey Graduate who has spent time working in Australia, the UK and NZ and is particularly interested in Feline Medicine. She is the proud mum of three boys and juggles work and family commitments with her passion for running and the outdoors. You can email Meg at megan@stokevets.co.nz

Kim Vickerman

Kim VickermanKim has joined our team part time from April 2010 until October 2010 after starting with us as a locum over Christmas 2009. Kim is a Massey Graduate who has 10 years experience in companion animal practice in NZ, Australia and the UK and is particularly experienced in 'pocket pet' (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs etc) medicine and surgery. She brings new skills and experience in dealing with these particularly challenging patients and compliments our present team extremely well. Kim is active outside of work enjoying swimming, cycling and running.

Nurses

We pride ourselves on the quality of our nursing staff. As part of our Best Practice Accreditation all our nursing staff must be fully trained, however they are much more than that - approachable, dedicated and continually striving for excellence. Tina

Tina Tina has been Head Veterinary Nurse for Stoke Vet Clinic since 1997 since beginning her Veterinary Nursing career in 1994 at age 16. In 2008 she became our Nursing Unit Manager overseeing all aspects of nursing care and development at the clinic. Since qualifying she has completed a Certificate in Canine Behaviour through Massey University and a number of business management papers. She has tutored Animal Care and Vet Nursing students in both the class room and practice since 2003. Tina's responsibilities include management and training of the nursing staff and maintenance of our diagnostic machines, instruments and equipment. Tina also ensures our continued high practice standards through NZVA Best Practice Accreditation. She is an extremely skilled and experienced vet nurse with a wealth of knowledge - a great resource of practical advice for our clients.

Kylie

Kylie Yates Kylie joined our team shortly after graduating as a vet nurse in 1998. As a senior nurse she is involved in the training of new staff and negotiating the complexities of our computer systems - a vital component of a well functioning practice. Kylie is responsible for maintaining our pharmacy and ensuring our patients are kept informed when their vaccinations are due. She has attended several annual Veterinary Nursing Conferences and has introduced new techniques from these into our daily practice procedures. Her long commitment to the practice ensures that she has her 'finger on the pulse' of our practice systems and procedures.

Diane

Diane Diane began working at Stoke Vet Clinic in 2001 after completing her Certificate in Veterinary Nursing through NMIT. Diane fills the role of head receptionist and accounts manager at the clinic. She is responsible for accounts, creditors, ordering pet food and supplies and staff training. Diane liaises with our suppliers to bring you all the great products we have available in our retail area - from cat beds to fish tank ornaments! In 2007 Diane completed a Certificate in Companion Animals Services specialising in felines and National Certificate in Retail (Level 2). These certificates set new standards for Veterinary and Pet Retail store reception staff and ensures even better service for our clients.

Victoria

Victoria Victoria has been working with us as a vet nurse since 2003 and maintains our anaesthetic and radiography equipment and files. Apart from her vet nursing duties she has been responsible for organising and running our very successful Puppy Preschool since 2004 along with Dr Joyce Ballance. She is also an active participant in continuing education having completed a number of Vet Nurse Plus seminars in emergency care, radiography, intravenous fluid therapy, catheter care and pain management.

Lisa

Lisa Lisa began with us as a work experience student in 2004. We were so impressed with her that we asked her to join our team after completing her Certificate in Animal Care and Certificate in Veterinary Nursing in 2005. Lisa's responsibilities include waste management and environmental control, monitoring and ordering pharmaceuticals and the management of the practice stationery. Lisa has also attended Vet Nurse Plus seminars and annual Veterinary Nursing Conferences to ensure that her skills continue to develop. Lisa's interpersonal skills ensure she maintains our great relationship with our patients' owners while providing the highest standards of care to their pets also. Lisa acheived a commendation in the NZ Vet Nurse of the Year Award for 2009 for community service!

Katie

Katie Katie began her Veterinary Nursing career in 1998 at age 17 by completing her Certificate in Animal Care (Otago Polytechnic) while still attending school at Waimea College. In 1999 Katie began working at Stoke Veterinary Clinic while she completed her Certificate in Veterinary Nursing through NMIT. After 4 years at the clinic Katie decided to head overseas for her OE and during this time she gained invaluable experience as a locum nurse at practices throughout the UK. Katie returned to us in 2007 to resume her role as one of our veterinary nursing team. Katie runs our nursing clinics and has had outstanding success with our weight loss clinics and dental clinics - please feel free to contact her if you wish to know more about these services.

Donna

Donna Donna joined us in 2007 and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our nursing team. She has both her National Certificate of Veterinary Nursing (2003) and her Diploma in Veterinary Nursing with Distinction (2007) and has worked at clinics in both Australia and New Zealand. Donna has interests in surgical nursing and radiography. Her high level of qualification and experience is a real asset to our veterinary nursing team. Donna is also involved in training new veterinary nurses as a tutor at NMIT. Donna has recently begun assisting in running Continuing Education programs for local nurses in conjunction with the regional NZVA branch.


Amy

AmyAmy is another valuable member of the nursing team. Amy volunteered at the Marlborough SPCA for 2 years before graduating with a Vet Nursing Certificate from NMIT. She is a highly active person and enjoys fishing, swimming, bushwalking and has recently started running half marathons. Amy loves working with our patients and is a 'people person' too - the ideal ingredients for a vet nurse. Amy has now graduated from a 'junior vet nurse' to 'vet nurse' status within the practice which acknowledges her continuing development of nursing skills and knowledge - congratulations Amy!

Shannon

Shannon Shannon is our receptionist and front of house person. She has been involved with animals all her life having grown up on a farm in Karamea caring for a minagerie of pets and farm animals. She is a big fan of netball and currently lives with her Kelpie dog 'Nell' on her parents farm here in Nelson. Shannon holds a National Certificate in Business Administration and is currently studying for a Certificate in Companion Animals Services which covers topics including dog and cat care and retails sales. Shannon has a vibrant personality and great sense of humour, just the person to welcome our clients and pets on their visits.

Malin

Malin: Malin is the most recent addition our team. Malin was also an outstanding student who spent some time at our practice during her training and we were quick to grab the opportunity to have her join the clinic. Malin brings new enthusiasm and a fantastic personality to our team and is an excellent junior nurse with an interest in the care of hospitalised animals. Outside of work Malin enjoys cooking and spending time with friends.
